Great carvings in indoor and outdoor caves
云冈石窟的点评
点评：Visited Yungang Grottoes near Datong in September 2025. It’s one of the most popular attractions in Shanxi, consisting of 20+ indoor and outdoor “caves” with carvings of the Buddha and other figures. While the “face” of the attraction is the outdoor Buddha(?), which is in one of the last caves, I personally found the indoor caves at the start and middle most interesting. There are surprisingly quite a few English language signs with detailed explanations of each cave and their history. Compared to the Longmen Grottoes in Henan, the Yungang Grottoes seemed less ravaged by conflict and vandalism overall, although it also felt smaller in scale.
The whole area is built-up to support tourism. There are plenty of bathrooms, food kiosks, and souvenir shops along the way, as well as freelance photographers charging around CNY 10 for a few digital photos (which they can send across via WeChat). The Yungang Grottoes are easily accessible by taxi from Datong’s main transport nodes. Overall, a great place to visit in Shanxi.
