点评:Tucked dramatically into the cliffs of the West Bank, the Temple of Hatshepsut is unlike anything else you’ll experience in Egypt.
If you’re already exploring the West Bank of Luxor, which you almost certainly will be when visiting nearby sites. This is an absolute must-add to your itinerary. And trust us, it’s not just another temple… it tells one of the most fascinating stories in ancient Egyptian history.
Built by Hatshepsut, a ruler who was never originally meant to hold power, this temple was commissioned as a place of worship for herself. Acting as regent for her young son, she stepped into the role of pharaoh and left behind a legacy carved directly into the mountainside.
And that’s where things get even more interesting.
As you explore, you’ll start to notice something unusual. Many of the carvings and images of Hatshepsut have been deliberately damaged or erased. This was the work of her son, Thutmose III, who later attempted to remove her from history altogether. It adds a completely different layer to the experience, you’re not just looking at history, you’re witnessing the aftermath of it.
Architecturally, the temple is stunning. Built into the cliffs, its tiered design feels bold and strikingly different from other temples across Egypt. It has a unique presence, almost blending into the landscape which makes it stand out even more.
We visited later in the morning after the Valley of the Kings, and while the site itself is incredible, the crowds were noticeably heavier. With that came large tour groups and guides moving quickly through the space, which can take away from the experience a little.
So if you’re looking to really take it all in, our biggest tip would be to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon once the tour groups have cleared. It makes a huge difference.
This isn’t just a temple, it’s a story of power, legacy, and erasure. And it’s one you won’t forget anytime soon.
