点评:This is a place that has it all: Haida culture, stunning scenery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, historical locations, sea mammals, birds, bears, deer, lush old growth forest, significant tides, jumping salmon, and hot springs. Jointly managed by the Council of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada, one can visit this remote park by kayak, Zodiac tour, or by sail/powerboat (the Parks Canada Gwaii Haanas website has a list of licensed tour operators). Independent visits are also possible, but one requires a reservation and an in-person orientation briefing prior to setting out. Weather in the archipelago is typical of the West Coast: changeable sun, rain, wind, calm, and fog, and each trip into the park will be unique as the operator adapts to the conditions and the needs/wishes of the group. Temperatures during the summer months are generally mild with no extremes, and May to September are the recommended visit months (and the dates when tour operators are available). Being on the Pacific Rim, seismic activity is also consideration (during our visit we were treated to a tsunami advisory). If planning a tour, book early, plan to be restricted to a minimal amount of gear (30 litres for our trip). and be aware that accommodation in Sandspit, Daajing Giids, and Skidegate before/after your tour can be quite limited. In addition, plan a visit to the excellent Haida Gwaii Museum. A trip to Gwaii Haanas will likely require significant planning and preparation, but will be spectacularly rewarding.
