点评:Airlie Gardens is an American gem and one of the finest gardens in the country. The original land grant of 640 acres dates back to 1735. Pembroke Jones bought the property in 1884 and transformed it with his wife into much of what you see today. He named it after his ancestral home in Scotland and the remaining 67 acres host over 120,000 visitors a year. In 1900, Camellias and Azaleas were brought in from the Fruitland Nursery in Augusta, Georgia that would later become the Augusta National Golf Course. There are 75,000 Azaleas,60,000 Tulips, a Camellia garden, winding pathways, grasses, lakes and majestic Live Oaks. The famous Airlie Oak dates to 1545 and is magnificent draped with Spanish Moss. Overlooking Bradley Creek and its oyster beds are many more Live Oaks that are impressive in their own right dating to the 1700 and 1800's. The historic Mt. Lebanon Church (c.1835) sits in the middle of the property and the overlook on Bradley Creek to Wrightsville Beach is peaceful and impressive. The history of this property and the Joneses is well worth investigating and I never knew the phrase, "Keeping up with the Joneses" came about due to what was said to be Sarah Jones annual spending budget of $300,000. It gives you a feel for the Southern Gilded Age and it's a shame their residence Airlie doesn't still stand. Airlie Road itself though short is a beautiful drive approaching the gardens and past it along the Intercoastal Waterway with beautiful homes all the way to the Wrightsville Beach bridge.
