点评:Valparaiso was Chile's largest port once and the second most important city. That drew many people from the country here, as well immigrants from all over the world.
As the number of people rose they started settling up in the hills. There are several of them, but most famous are Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre.
During that settlement boom there were almost no official building regulations, so everyone built where and how they could. Most used materials were wood and twisted iron. Due to seaside Pacific climate that iron started to rust. The cheapest and most effective way to resolve this was to paint your house.
That formed one of the world's largest open air galleries, recognized under UNESCO. Thousands of amazing murals and graffiti formed an amazing street art. They range from plain small portraits, graffiti inscriptions to grand scale murals spread over the entire house facade. Some have political meaning, some religious, there're music murals, landscape murals....everything.
They're spread all over the area, over several hills. You need at least 2-3 hours to visit them requiring steep uphill/downhill walks, certainly not suitable for those with mobility issues. There're two funiculars to help you getting up.
Apart from that, there's abundance of restaurants with local food, as well bars.
Area is pretty safe with lot of people out both, locals and tourists, however don't flash out with your jewelry, watches and keep your phone safe.
