Long drive through desert to see architectural masterpieces

点评：Though it is a long drive from Aswan, it is well worth the 3.5 hours in the vehicle! It is interesting to see how the government and the military are transforming the desert into arable land. The "New" Nile canal system transports water to areas west of the Nile in order to reclaim the desert. The crops are appearing to thrive in their irrigation circles.
The rock-hewn temples of Abu Simbel are considered an architectural masterpiece of Ancient Egypt, dating back over 3000 years. Constructed during the reign of Ramses II and set in a spectacular location overlooking Lake Nasser. The Great Temple is aligned so that in February and October, the first rays of the rising sun illuminate the figures in the inner sanctuary.
UNESCO saved the temples from flooding when the Aswan Dam was built, by moving them 200m from their original locations - a phenomenal feat. The path approaching the temple area has been cleverly designed to maximise the wow factor. There is quite a walk from the parking area to the entrance and Visitor Centre/cafe. Toilet facilities are available - for a fee. There are a large number of stalls selling souvenirs.
