点评:Awe-inspiring, spectacular, majestic, breathtaking, and many such adjectives can't fully capture my experience! You really have to be there in person to know what I mean. The admission fee like many Archeological Survey of India (ASI) sites is quite reasonable for Indian citizens and OCI holders (Rs. 40) and completely worth it if you're a foreigner (Rs. 600). You can get the tickets online too by using the QR code near the ticket kiosks. We primarily visited Kailash (Cave 16 ) and Vishvakarma (Cave 10) caves and while both were amazing, the former is the most popular and intricate cave. We also paid for a government guide (Rs. 1500 - fixed pricing per group and gratuities are appreciated but optional) and it was completely worth it for the information we received. We spent around 4 hours at the caves but you can easily spend an entire day if you explore all the caves. This is the kind of site that's best to visit for all age groups and obviously, history enthusiasts.
Some things to be mindful of:
- Government guides are unfortunately hard to find and I wish ASI would improve on this in the future. It's best to book one before you visit or talk to someone at the entrance.
- Wear hats, use sunscreen, and stay hydrated. It can get kind of hot even in mid February and starting your visit early in the morning is the way to go.
- Accessibility can be an issue. There are ramps in someplaces but that's not universal. There were people at the entrance offering wheel chair service at a price. Some stairs can be steep. So a sensible pair of shoes is recommended.
- There is a shuttle (I believe the price is minimal) that transfers people from one cave to another but if you're just visiting caves 16, 10 and other nearby caves like us, you may not need it.
Overall, a great experience and I can't recommend this UNESCO World Heritage site enough!
