点评：State Farm Center, originally called Assembly Hall, has been the Crown Jewel of the University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign since it was opened on March 2, 1963. Located across the street from Memorial Stadium, it is an architectural masterpiece designed by Max Abramovitz, a distinguished Illinois alumnus who also designed United Nations buildings and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana. Dubbed "the Flying Saucer" for its classic dome that stretches 400 feet across and at one time was one of only two edge-supported domes in the world, it has hosted rock concerts, Broadway shows, University of Illinois commencement ceremonies, Illinois men's and women's basketball games and the Illinois high school basketball tournament. Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bob Hope, Garth Brooks, Reba McIntire, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and the Harlem Globetrotters have performed in the arena. Renamed when the State Farm Insurance Company became a sponsor in 2013, it underwent a sweeping $169.5 million renovation in 2014-2016 that renovated the seating bowl, added four levels of premium seating, improved rest rooms and concessions and added a Hall of Fame and air conditioning. Seating capacity was reduced from 17,000 to 15,544. The iconic, one-of-a-kind roof is supported by 614 miles of one-quarter-inch steel wire. Today, it is one of the oldest basketball arenas in the country but none of the newer facilities compare to the State Farm Center's exterior beauty.
