点评:We had a planned visit through Cascade travel with our amazing guide Hovik to this unassuming but utterly mesmerising little Armenian treasure in the region of Noratus, Gavar region near Lake Sevan! We were enthusiastically greeted and led down to the air conditioned cellars of this small but compact and well organised cheese factory. Behind the glass panels were the rounds of yellow cheese and before us was placed a platter of various cheeses with herbs and confiture to suit the blends. A soft spoken but perfectly manicured accented young man took us through the history of the Mikayelan farm, a biochemist and a business couple and its growth over the last 12 yrs we had a sample and then were led to the most captivating scrumptious cheese tasing event we have EVER been to. We were led into a bright and simply decorated conservatoire and sat down to a platter of 5 cheeses , spike numbered 1-5 . Cheese 1 was a "wine chhese with Dry Areni wine (the original Noahide wine!), which had a acid cherry and cardemom jam - - Semi aoft it rinsed the whole mouth with a mysterious but delightful tangy saly flavour! Cheese 2 was a thyme covered smooth cheese with apricot, cinnamon and chilli condiment- The thyme flavour came through very clearly but not overstated and the sweet apricot delicately balanced with chilli, pepper and cinnamon added an intriguing spicy twist to the combination. The lingering remnants of the thyme apricot and pepper with the strong cheese aftertaste was unforgettable! We bought some of this combo! Cheese 3 - sundried tomato was studded on the soft cheese and added a pleasant tartness to the underlying flavour which was lively and complimentary. Cheese 4 was 1 yr old cognac covered soaked cheese which was hard and salty - it was advised to be tried with chocolate or apricot sauce. It was fiercely tasty and went best with a sweet condiment like the jam! Cheese 5 was a blue cheese - a Roquefort covered with Basil made in pots buried in the soil and came through with the sharpest most memorable flavour. Though it did not need any pairing with a sauce , we were surprised to find out that addition of a mulberry preserve (Horaz) accentuated the flavour even more!! We were sold !! and bought a sample to take home. We were just flabbergasted at the variety, intensity, and sheer tastiness of the selection. There were no crumbs of cheese left after our tasting session and we went back to purchase two of the most outstanding samples. with the accompanying condiments! The staff were gracious, knowledgable and enthusiastic employees obviously loving their work and proud of the products and the farm! Highly Highly recommended as an absolute MUST for visiting Armenia! Its cheese tasting at the highest level anywhere in the world and trust us, you will be pleasantly surprised!!
