点评:Quito's Old Town is the usual wonderful Latin American mix of the spectacular colonial palaces and churches, faded grand old homes, and hum of everyday life trying to make ends meet. There is poverty in Quito, and Ecuador generally. Times are hard. As tourists we were warned to be aware of pickpockets and passing motor bikes - although the same applies in Rome or Paris. We don't flaunt the fact that we're tourists but I'm sure we're fooling no one. But we felt perfectly safe during the day, and simply took (incredibly cheap) taxis after dark. What I noticed and appreciated is the lack of hard sell even in the very few 'tourist' places we went in. Ecuadorans seem to have a natural courtesy, and you can wander through the streets of Centro Historico without being hassled, stop for a coffee or chocolate (recommended!) without being a magnet for street vendors, and sit under the trees in the squares and quietly enjoy Quito unfolding around you. If you're into churches, or museums, there's enough in Quito Old Town to keep you occupied for several days. We were in Ecuador primarily for the wildlife, and even just day trips from Quito will satisfy the most hummingbird-hungry photographer (although staying in lodges up in the Pacto region is certainly the way to go!) But Quito is a great base, and the grand hotels or smaller family-run ones around the Old Town are perfect for starting your Ecuadoran adventure.
