点评:Boathouse Row is a popular destination in Philadelphia. Ten of the original boat houses remain.
The first amateur rowing club in the United States was founded on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia in 1858. It was also the home of the nation’s oldest all female rowing team.
Local rowing clubs still take pride in their historic boathouses. I saw a couple rowing in the distance. I also met a member of a rowing club during my visit and members of Sedgeley Club.
Sedgeley Club was once composed of Philadelphia ladies who enjoyed canoeing on the Schuylkill River. Their roots go back to 1897 when they were located at Boathouse Row #14.
In 1902 Sedgeley Club built their own Boathouse where a lighthouse was located at Boathouse Row #15.
Arthur H. Brockie, an esteemed architect, adapted Sedgeley Club’s Boathouse to encompass the lighthouse built in 1887 by Frank Thurwanger. Brockie designed a shingle, Colonial Revival house. Sedgeley Club now helps maintain the historic boathouse and the lighthouse.
