点评:Ha'amonga A Maui - the burden of Maui - was constructed around a thousand years ago by King Tu'itatui. His name means the King who hits the knees, as he would hit out with his staff at anyone who approached him too closely. He would watch the construction of the trilithon, leaning against a large nearby rock named 'Esi Makafaakinanga, in case he was attacked from behind.
The trilithon may be a symbol of unity between his two sons, a gateway to the royal compound, or an agricultural monument. In the 1960s, the then King - Taufa'ahau Tupou IV - posited that the grooves cut on the top of the trilithon indicated the solstices. He had paths cleared to the coast along those bearings, and they do indeed line up, but it is probable that the cuts on the lintel were made some time after the trilithon was built.
It's only open ground now, but head on across the lawns behind the trilithon - this area was once the Mala'e, where the King received tribute from other islands, such as Niue and Wallis. Beyond this is a small tomb, the Langi Heketa, prototype of the much larger tombs at Mu'a/Lapaha, and Tu'itatui may be buried there.
Beyond this, is a narrow track that descends through a gap in the upraised reef, to a little golden sand beach, with shallow clear water. I wonder if only Royals were allowed to swim here, in days gone by. In the bush around the site are other platforms, where the more important buildings of the day - long gone, due to being built of wood and thatch, would have stood, including Tu'itatui's house.
