The road that leads to the volcano is very unique and you will cross a lot of villages, banyan trees and a lot of locals walking. It takes approximately 1.5h ( the roads are very bad) from the Tanna Airport aprox.
The volcano itself is impressive and you go by car to almost the top. From there you need to walk 5 min upstairs and then you reach the edge of the crater that will leave you speechless. You can see the lava easily and you will also experience and feel the constant explosions. By far the best experience in Vanuatu and makes the trip to Tanna 100% worth it.
It is not cheap. The entrance fee for the volcano is about 10,000 VT (85 USD) which I find excessive but it is worth it. A car from the airport (round trip ) will cost you 15,000 VT (125 USD) and needs to be a proper 4x4 given the road. Do not expect to find any cafe or supermarket near the volcano. The visitor center sells bottles of water and soft drinks but very often they run out.
Nature can be unexpected and some days it is not possible to visit the edge of the volcano because it is too windy, there are ashes in the air or the volcano is too active. In those cases, they allow you to come back for free on the following day (make sure to keep the ticket).
You will not regret all the expenses, the time and money it takes to get there. It is a unique experience
