点评:What an absolutely extraordinary experience! Our visit to the Elephanta Caves was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our time in Mumbai.
Our tour was organised through Le Passage to India, and everything ran beautifully. Our guide met us promptly and escorted us to the Gateway of India, where he organised our ferry crossing. The 45-minute boat journey to Elephanta Island was a lovely experience in itself.
On arrival, we chose to walk along the causeway rather than take the little toy train, enjoying the opportunity to chat with our guide before meeting David, our local cave guide.
David was absolutely fantastic! Born on Elephanta Island and now living in Mumbai, he had a wonderful personal connection to the place and shared fascinating insights into island life, its history and the local community.
After climbing the long flight of steps, lined with colourful stalls selling everything from inexpensive souvenirs to beautiful handcrafted artwork, we reached the magnificent caves.
Nothing quite prepares you for the extraordinary craftsmanship inside.
Carved directly into solid rock around 1,500 years ago, the enormous pillars, sculptures and chambers are breathtaking. Everything has been created from the rock itself, rather than constructed from separate pieces. The scale, precision and symmetry are astonishing.
David brought the whole place to life, explaining the different representations of Shiva, the stories behind the sculptures and their significance within Hindu culture. The central shrine containing the Shiva linga, with its four entrances and beautifully aligned views through the surrounding chambers, was particularly memorable.
We learnt an enormous amount about Hindu beliefs, traditions and mythology, and David's knowledge and engaging explanations made it all so accessible and fascinating.
Afterwards, we enjoyed browsing the market stalls on our way back down, finding some beautiful and unusual souvenirs to bring home, before returning to Mumbai by ferry.
One recommendation: go early in the morning! We enjoyed wonderfully peaceful conditions, with plenty of space and time to appreciate the caves. They become considerably busier later in the day.
We cannot recommend this experience highly enough. The arrangements were seamless, the setting extraordinary, and David was a truly outstanding guide.
A fascinating, memorable and deeply enriching experience. Absolutely five stars!
