点评:My wife and I, along with two long-time friends — all four of us senior citizens — were part of a group of 20 on an escorted tour of China. This was the first day we decided to venture out on our own, as we had a free day in Beijing.
I had a look on TripAdvisor and the Temple of Heaven stood out, so we then had to work out how to get there. It was on the opposite side of the city from our hotel. I opened my Uber app, but quickly realised it doesn't work in China. I then remembered seeing DiDi inside the Alipay app.
You need to download and register Alipay before you travel to China to pay for goods and services. It can feel unnerving to register before you go as there are many security stages, but you must persevere — you have to use this or another payment app while in China. To be honest, once it is registered it is so easy to use. We ordered DiDis through it, paid for goods by either scanning the shop's QR code or showing our own from the app, and bought eSIMs. Don't buy an eSIM before you go — they are as cheap as chips on Alipay. Much cheaper than the ones we bought in the UK before leaving, which we used up in no time. If I remember correctly, it was £15 for an unlimited data SIM for ten days.
We ordered a luxury car which arrived in minutes. The price for a 45-minute journey was £7 — yes, everything in China is that cheap!
When we arrived we went to the ticket machines. You have to carry your passport at all times in China and often need it for things like this. For some reason the machines would not recognise any of our passports or issue tickets. After about half an hour of trying, we went to the ticket booth and used the translator in the Alipay app to ask for help. The lady in the booth took our passports, handed them back and told us it was free for senior citizens. Apparently a lot of things are — maybe the UK Government could take a leaf out of China's book on how to treat senior citizens with respect!
We went to the turnstiles, showed our passports and we were in. We then spent the next two hours slowly walking around the whole site following the signs — it is very well signposted throughout.
We visited everywhere within the grounds, including the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Imperial Vault of Heaven. It was fairly busy, but you only really noticed when you wanted to look into one of the prayer rooms and had to wait a short while until someone moved out to make space.
Most of the grounds are flat and well-paved, which was ideal for us. There are steps up to some of the structures, but they are easy to climb — quite even and well-maintained. There were plenty of places to sit around the site. I don't remember much shade around the buildings themselves, but looking at my photos there are shaded areas under the trees in other parts of the grounds.
The people in traditional costume really made the visit for us. They were in the foreground of a lot of our photos, which makes them much more interesting. We were apprehensive at first about photographing locals, but they really enjoy it. As I mentioned, they loved getting into photos with us and taking photos of us on their smartphones. It was obviously still quite unusual to see Westerners — we didn't see many others as we travelled around.
Getting back was just as easy. We ordered another DiDi, which cost around £15 because it was rush hour and took over an hour. We also opted for a seven-seater on the way back. The car on the way there was fine, but we are not so small and the back seat was a bit cramped, so the larger car was more comfortable. Even at £15, it was still amazing value.
It was a really good choice for an afternoon out in Beijing and we would thoroughly recommend it.
