点评:We visited Ngoc Son Temple this afternoon, and our leg covers came in handy again following our earlier excursion to another religious site.
Crossing the red bridge over the lake to the island temple, leaving the busy Hanoi streets behind us, made for a beautiful transition to a more spiritual place. The temple itself is wonderfully decorated, with flowing plants and wildlife to see all around. We spotted herons and turtles across the lake, while the courtyard featured huge, brightly coloured floral displays.
The external pagoda, with its Vietnamese flag flying proudly above it, made for quite a spectacle. Turning to look out across the water towards the ancient tower was equally stunning.
Moving inside the temple, signs highlighting the no-photography rule were not exactly being adhered to by most visitors. Naturally, we respected the request and took no photographs ourselves. The atmosphere inside the main temple was peaceful and reverent, with people actively praying, making it a truly memorable experience.
Alongside the main temple is a small outbuilding where two preserved turtles are housed in special display cases. The information boards explained that only six of these turtles remain in the wild, and the story of the turtle providing a sword to an ancient king made for particularly interesting reading.
A cultural must when visiting Hanoi. At 100,000 VND (£2.82) for both of us, it was excellent value and well worth the time we spent exploring the island.
