点评:I want to be clear that I do *not* blame this on our guide or the tour company. I am posting this so that other tourists understand the inherent risks of this activity. I do wish the guides had warned us, and they didn’t, but I should have taken more precautions.
We went on the boat tour to Monkey Island. The guide and boat operator encouraged our young children to hand-feed wild monkeys, placing them into direct contact with wild animals. While one of the tamarin monkeys was eating from my child’s hand, it gripped the child’s hand with a sharp claw and made a scrape that broke the skin.
The WHO classifies this as a class 2 exposure that requires immediate commencement of post-exposure prophylaxis for rabies. There is rabies present in this part of Panama. Rabies shows no symptoms for weeks but is eventually 100% fatal.
We spent a day in Panama City going to multiple private hospitals and could not find rabies immunoglobulin for our child. So we had to cancel the rest of our trip and return to the US, at great loss. Ignore what the guides say. DO NOT hand-feed monkeys.
