点评:Coronet Peak and The Remarkables have successfully reinvented skiing by removing most of the skiing.
Why settle for boring reliability when you can spend hundreds of dollars every day wondering whether the mountain will open at all? Every morning is an adventure. Will it be closed? Partially closed? Or will you be allowed the privilege of driving up the mountain to personally inspect the closed chairlifts yourself?
The wind policy deserves special recognition. Resorts in Europe operate through weather conditions that would apparently qualify as a natural disaster here. Meanwhile, a light breeze in Queenstown seems sufficient to trigger a complete operational meltdown.
But nothing compares to the fresh snow experience. After a dump of overnight snow, when every skier expects the best day of the season, the resort somehow delivers its worst. Vast areas remain closed, grooming appears to be treated as an optional extra, and two lonely runs are prepared for the masses.
Thousands of skiers, two groomed runs. What could possibly go wrong?
The resulting chaos creates a fantastic sense of community, as everyone spends the day standing together in lift queues discussing where all their money went.
Honestly, someone should send the management team to Austria, France, Italy or Switzerland for a training course. Not for skiing, but simply to observe the radical and innovative concept of running a ski resort after fresh snow falls.
If you're looking for dependable skiing, save your money and go elsewhere. If you're looking for expensive disappointment, relentless queues, closed terrain and scenic views of inactive chairlifts, you've found paradise.
