点评:The museum is testimony to the hard work and dedication of people keen to preserve this unique piece of railway history. There's not much money to be made out of railway preservation, not least in a country like New Zealand with a small population. So to have created this excellent museum which gives secure long-term storage to not just the locomotive but also a wide range of associated artefacts is a major achievement and fully deserving of support.
The Fell system used a central rail which was gripped horizontally in a clamp-like arrangement to provide extra adhesion for trains on gradients that otherwise would be impractical for a railway. The adhesion is required not just to climb the hill, but just as importantly for braking during the descent. The Rimuataka incline was the only place in the world where this system was used into the twentieth century for ascending a hill, although the Fell system was used in several other places in New Zealand to help control trains descending gradients that weren't quite as steep.
It's a small museum so more general facilities are necessarily limited, but its right in the centre of town so within easy reach of shops and cafes.
