点评:I am disappointed to be writing this review as l have always loved Newstead Abbey, but what happened to myself, my friend and my four year old daughter at Newstead yesterday was unbelievable. After spending a couple of hours yesterday afternoon wandering around the grounds, we walked through the tunnel that leads to the Eagle Pond area at the back of the house. At 4.45 pm (15 minutes before the grounds close) we made our way to the gate in the Monk's Garden that leads to the front part of the house/car park. We were getting anxious as we could hear thunder in the distance and wanted to get back to the car park as soon as possible. Unfortunately that gate was locked and the only other way out of that part of the grounds was through the tunnel that we had originally walked through to get in. However, upon arrival at the tunnel at 4.50 pm, we saw that the gate at the entrance to the tunnel had also been locked and that we were therefore effectively trapped in the garden as a thunderstorm was approaching. We then spent 10 minutes shouting for help at the top of our voices. No one came. We also tried unsuccessfully to phone the number of the Abbey for help but no one answered. At around 5 pm the heavens opened and it began to rain heavily. We ran to shelter in the tunnel, which quickly started to fill with puddles of water, including a very deep one next to the locked gate. It was like a horror film. I phoned my partner, who was also unable to get through to anyone in the house by phone. In the end he had to call the police, who were trying to find the contact details of groundskeepers but said that if they couldn't get hold of anyone we would have to contact the fire brigade! My friend phoned her son (who was luckily a 15 minute drive away) and he drove to the Abbey and saw a member of staff going into the house, whom he then alerted to our plight. Said member of staff then made her way over to us and unlocked the gate but initially couldn't open it because it was jammed shut at the top. She had to get help from another member of staff to open it. They were apologetic. However, there needs to be a better system in place as closing time approaches. Maybe they should ring a bell to alert visitors that gates are about to be locked. And the gates should certainly not be locked before closing time. There should also be an emergency number to contact. We were effectively locked in the grounds for 45 minutes during heavy rainfall with no way of alerting anyone on the property. The experience has shaken us all up and we will not be returning anytime soon.
