点评:It is £15 to look around the abbey / house which was once home to Lord Byron and this is after you have paid the £7 parking entry fee (card payment only) at the gate before making the drive to the car park.
I initially thought that £15 was quite expensive but once inside the abbey / house, there is so much history, so much to see and so many rooms and corridors to discover, including the cloisters downstairs that I changed my mind. It is worth the entry fee and it is also an annual pass so you can visit anytime for a year.
The guides dotted about the house were neither intrusive nor entered into laborious monologues and this was a relief.
Gift shop was nicely presented and quite large but had many generic items simply put in Newstead Abbey wrapping. More local sourced products of quality, please.
The grounds are quite extensive and contain a wonderful Japanese garden and some excellent topiary and there are two lakes.
Overall, the things that let the visit down were the relentless wokery and indoctrination throughout the house banging on about Britain's colonial past and slavery and featuring art works and musings from some african artist.
I wasn't born when Britain was involved in the horrific slave trade and therefore I have nothing to be ashamed of and nothing to stop me being proud of the heritage of my country. Britain helped stop the slave trade too, which is a fact often not mentioned in the wokery.
I visit historical sites in the UK to learn of the history of the UK. Not elsewhere.
Mens toilets belonged in the 1980's. Absolutely atrocious and really need condemning and a new toilet block built. People pay to enter the site and have a right to expect a lot better standards.
