点评:Famously the ancestral home of Lord Byron, and a pilgrimage site for all those enamoured with the man once known as “Mad, bad, and dangerous to know” but this site is much much more! Built as an Augustinian priory by King Henry II ca. 1170, as one (of many) penances he paid following the murder of Thomas Becket, it’s ruins can be clearly be seen as you approach the house. The building and grounds have been in care of Nottingham CC since 1931.
The staff here were fantastic! Not only knowledgeable, but enjoyable to talk with! If anything I would add a hour to your visit, just in case one strikes up a conversation with a guide. While I was (and still) happy to pay £15 to enter the house… not least as the historic building is on Heritage at Risk Register, I was a little take aback by being to ask pay £2 to walk to the house??? No mention on the website?
The site can be reached by Direct bus from Nottingham Victoria bus station (with buses every 10 mins).
In all, worth the visit!
