点评:A shoutout to my Artpass which entitled me to free entry. The dockyard is a fair walk from the railway station. Be careful as you may miss the entrance (the big dockyard gate - see photo - is not open to the public) but we got there for the 10am opening time. Get the free map as there is a lot to do. The most energetic exhibits are the two ships and one submarine. A lot of reviews talk about the sub, and believe me its a memorable experience both for the education and amazement of how the crew lived, and the physical "gymnastics" you need to perform on the tour. There are static exhibits all over the site including trains, cannons, helicopters etc etc. The ropery, which is still a working industry is very impressive (walk along the outside next to the river). The volunteers are amazing and some of them worked in the docks as did the previous generations of their families. They were all so helpful and gave lots of background and stories. The steam, steel & submarines exhibition contains some good photos and sale models of the dockyard over its life. As the Dockyard closed at 4pm we had to rush round the RNLI collection , the NO. 1 Smithery and the 3 Slip - THE BIG SPACE (and big is the word - make sure you go up to the top floor). I left wishing I had more time to look around and hopefully I can make a return visit.
