点评:Sutton Hoo is an amazing place - a large house surrounded by Bluebell woodland and heath, including a plot to the side of the house full of raised mounds. In 1937, the owner Edith Pretty enlisted local archaeologists including basil Brown to explore the site and from the first few mounds they found fragments of glass, Iron and a sword tip. They suspected that these mounds had been previously disturbed and raided.
In 1939 they started digging on a new mound and found Iron ship rivets. From there the British Museum became involved and the huge ship burial was exposed. There's no actual original ship to see as the remains were very fragile and degraded in the acis soil - as was any bodily remains - but there are reconstructions and photos of the boat and amazing artefacts they found.
On a visit, there's a big display hall with (mostly reconstructed replica) artefacts and a useful film. The replicas really are stunning and well displayed, we just had a couple of issues with the display - firstly, it was so dark in there that you needed a torch to read the smaller display labels/explanations. Secondly, we found the first person narratives of "I am a Saxon wise woman..." etc pretty childish.
There is then a lovely walk out to the burial mounds - with a tall tower to climb and view the site from - and the ground floor of the house is open and contains a lot of original photos from the 1939 dig
There are also lovely walks through the woods down to the river and Trampers available to borrow for the less able walkers. There's a nice cafe and shop too and the staff are friendly and helpful!
