点评：The museum's in an old house, rather than being purpose-built, which means a few dead-ends and back tracks, which adds to the fun. It provides a very good overview of what has been going on in Orkney over the past several thousand years, from the Neolithic, through the Picts and Vikings, to the present day. One room showcases art and crafts from modern-day Orkney – I was particularly taken by a landscape painting created by Magi Sinclair. There's a wealth of artefacts in the museum, all well contextualised. There's also currently (until 26 September 2026) an exhibition, 'Torn from that Lovely Shore' that explores Orkney's connections with the Atlantic slave trade, including stories of some slaves who were brought to Orkney. I don't know how the museum manages to maintain such good quality displays and collections while remaining free to enter – do remember to make a donation before you leave.
