点评:All I knew about Robert Burns before visiting was that he was a Scottish poet and that every January people gather to eat a truly questionable combination of food in his honour. However, after a trip to Dumfries back in April, I decided to explore some of the Burns sites, beginning with his final home.
The gentleman on the front desk was fantastic. He was more than happy to talk about Burns, incredibly knowledgeable, and spoke with a genuine passion for the subject. It was obvious that he loved what he was doing. He explained the exhibits, recommended other Burns-related locations to visit, and helped bring the poet to life far more effectively than any information board could.
Since then, I've looked further into Burns's life, and it is a fascinating story. For all the romanticisation that surrounds him, Burns was still a bit of a rogue. That, in itself, is part of what makes him such an interesting character.
I was also pleased to see that his wife, Jean Armour, receives recognition here. She certainly put up with a lot. People often say that behind every great man is a great woman. In 2026, that phrase may sound outdated to many, suggesting a life spent supporting somebody else's dream. But over 230 years ago, it carried a very different meaning. Whatever your view, Jean Armour's contribution to Burns's life deserves to be remembered.
One detail that particularly struck me was that on the day Burns was buried, Jean was giving birth to Maxwell, one of their many children. There is something undeniably poetic about that: one life being mourned while another begins.
Even if you arrive knowing very little about Robert Burns, this is an excellent place to start. It provides a fascinating insight into both the poet and the man behind the legend.
I still can't face haggis, neeps and tatties, though.
