点评：We drove along narrow, windy, lanes enveloped by hedges to Tarn Hows, the picturesque beauty spot not far from Coniston which Beatrix Potter bought and donated to the NT. It is an extremely beautiful mountain lake, surrounded by wooded slopes and offering picture postcard views. It is almost completely quiet and serene , with only intermittent birdsong. As we all know, a “tarn” is a mountain lake, usually of glacial origin. In fact, what we see today was created by wealthy Victorian landowner, James Garth Marshall in the 1860s, merging three smaller tarns into the present highly photogenic one. The NT has ensured that its 3.2 km circuit is accessible. The whole tour (about one hour) provides many stunning viewpoints. There is a refreshment bar at the carpark.
