点评:This 1550s imperial mosque was constructed by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and architect Mimar Sinan who had earlier built the Sehzade Mehmet Mosque which we also visited. It is the largest Ottoman mosque and is built on a hill that overlooks the Golden Horn and is a landmark in Istanbul. It is near Galata Bridge so it is easy to visit. We visited on a Sunday morning around 9am and it did have visitors but was uncrowded. The central carpeted area was restricted by an ornamental barrier unless you are praying. No shoes, headscarves for women and respectful behaviour and dress are expected though no-one was enforcing it.
There are pretty gardens around the mosque and they give some good views across the city and the Golden Horn. Unlike most other mosques we visited, the ablution taps are on an exterior wall of the mosque so the fountain is just decorative. The large courtyard has a portico with tall columns and muqarnas-carved capitals. The design of the mosque is a square with a central dome and semi-domes. There are four main square columns supporting the ceiling and columns supporting archways. It is very tall. The carpet is the prayer style one where each persons area is outlined and points to the niche. There are multiple rings of suspended lights though not all of them were lit. Unfortunately much of the original painted decoration has been lost and the current painting dates from the 19th century but I still found it beautiful. Iznik tiles have been used around the mihrib and there are clear glass windows around the domes and elaborate stained-glass windows at the entrances. I thought it all very grand.
