点评:You might easily miss these as you pass through Lismore. There is little sign of them from the main road.
They are well worth the visit. Surprising large, they are laid out as a series of terraces that descend towards the main road. There is a great variety of planting and layouts, so they present a different appearance at the various times of the year.
There are two distinct spaces, separated by a pathway, which has to be crossed via an entrance gate (the Riding House), remnants of the defensive system for the castle. The upper space is a more formal garden with beds, paths and hedges, while the lower space is more naturalistic with paths weaving through shrubs, lawns and trees.
The site is steep, so you need a certain level of agility and, though there are some possibilities, the experience is significantly more limited for those with mobility issues. To get to the lower garden, you have to use a narrow staircase in the Riding House. There are warning signs but the stairs are good with good handrails. It is worth the effort!
The gardens also give you a close up view of the castle itself and you get a good sense of the scale of the place.
Parking is plentiful in the main town car park near the main road. It is a five minute walk uphill to the garden entrance. There is an entrance fee but it is well worth the money.
