点评:The Archaeology Museum, The Museum of the Ancient Orient, The Tiled Kiosk Museum. are three separate main units in the same compound. They are on the edge of the Topkapi Palace, somewhat tucked away, so you need to be on the look out for the entrance.
If you visit only one, make sure that it is the Archaeology Museum. It is not just a 'rainy day' place to go, you will be blown away by some of the exhibits and every room has something to capture your attention. Most of the artifacts date from the Greek and Roman period and the quality of much of the sculpture is superb. You can get 'up close and personal' to most and really appreciate the skill of the artist.
It is the Sidon sarcophagi that are breathtaking. In 1887, a royal necropolis (Ayaa Necropolis) was found near Sidon, Lebanon. The finds were transported to Istanbul and were the basis for the museum. Leaving to one side the fact that Lebanon surely has a claim to them, it is a privilege to see such quality work. The detail is astonishing and their survival in such good condition is remarkable.
This room alone is worth the admission fee. The only jarring element is that a human skeleton is exhibited in his Egyptian period coffins. He had asked to be left in peace and just to be sure that put a curse on anyone who disturbed his eternal rest. It is a pity that the archaeologists did not honour his request.
The admission fee is well worth it and far better value than some of the much more expensive sights such as the Basilica Cistern. The Tile Museum was closed when I visited (February 2026) and did not look like it was going to open any time soon. However, a couple of hours will pass easily and there is a small coffee kiosk in the grounds to allow you time to process some of the sights before having another look. The cats are particularly tame here!!
