点评:There are those who have lived a full life and then there’s Thaddeus Kosciuszko. Born in 1746 in what was then part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, he attended the Corps of Cadets in Warsaw and then made his way to North America in 1776. His help during the Revolutionary War at Saratoga and West Point was invaluable, and he was admired by George Washington and befriended by Thomas Jefferson. After participating (literally) in the final battle of the revolution in 1782, he returned to his native country and helped foment resistance against Czarist Russia. Unsuccessful despite his heroism, he was imprisoned for two years and released on the condition that he never returned. Sojourning to the USA for a second time, he landed again in Philadelphia and stayed at a house on the corner of Third and Pine Streets during the winter of 1797-98.
The country’s smallest National Memorial is a modest affair, spread out over two rooms on two floors of the house. The ground floor contains information on Kosciuszko’s life as well as a display of authentic memorabilia including coins, post cards, and stamps. The main display is found on the second floor, consisting of a reconstruction of his bed chamber. There are static storyboards throughout, detailing most of the important episodes of the General’s life. In summary, this was a concise-if-slightly-routine collection of artifacts and displays. However, like most National Historic Sites it was monitored by two excellent Park Rangers (Kevin and Dillon) who were a repository of knowledge and the highlight of the visit. While the house is probably not worth a separate journey alone in lieu of a site such as Independence Hall, it is an essential (and free!) addendum to the story of our country’s beginnings
