点评:Wow! My family and I visited this site in late March when we were on our way to Badlands NP. It’s only a few miles from the entrance so make sure to stop in.
We went into the visitor center and we were immediately greeted by Ranger Matt. He gave a quick break down of the nuclear missiles that were/are stored under ground in SD and surrounding states. Make sure to watch the 30 minute long movie. Amazing how close we were to a nuclear war!
I randomly asked Ranger Matt if there was an area where we could see the missiles. We weren’t able to see the missiles, but Ranger Matt was very generous with his time and he gave us a private tour of the facility that housed the 8 military personnel that were in charge of “turning the key” at the site. We drove about 4 miles west of the visitor center to get there. If you have an extra hour to spare, try to hunt down Ranger Matt and ask if he can show you around. He was very knowledgeable and you could tell he loved telling us about the history. He used us as training so they didn’t charge us anything (normally they charge), but we gave a donation for his time.
This history is unbelievable. One of the rangers that actually was in charge of “the key”, is a ranger at the visitor center.
