My first visit to Akagera National Park!

点评：Traveling through Rwanda for about a week, I was keen to check out the eastern province, and in doing so searched for a tour company that could get me out to Akagera for a day trip. Without any group tours available at the time, Herman (from Kadoo) came highly recommended by a local friend in Kigali, and he was wonderful from the start in helping arrange for me a private tour out east.
And I tell you … it was definitely a long day trip from Kigali! But I was afforded a superb guide (Jean Bisco) and I was very impressed with Kadoo in general. Jean was professional, polite, incredibly knowledgeable (especially on birds!), and excellent at spotting animals! Note that verbal communication was a challenge at times (I had difficulty understanding his English/accent).
A few observations from my trip:
- I’ve been on better safaris (in terms of wildlife sightings) in other countries, but it was nice to do another one in Africa after 20 years since my first!
- Lunch stop within the park is pricey. Even water costs 1000. Be prepared to have correct change.
- The black flies are a nightmare in Akagera! Take bug repellant!!!
- The road once you exit the north end of the park and head back to Kigali is also a nightmare. “African chair massage” (as Jean called it) doesn’t even cut it … I wouldn’t recommend it for people with joint issues or who don’t like bumpy rides (it goes for at least an hour…….).
- Our vehicle broke down halfway back to Kigali. It took a couple of hours for some locals to help fix the jeep, so make sure you have extra snacks with you at all times!

- 公园内的午餐价格昂贵。就连水都要1000先令。记得准备好零钱。
- 阿卡盖拉的黑蝇简直是噩梦！一定要带驱蚊剂！！！
- 从公园北端出来返回基加利的路况也很糟糕。“非洲椅式按摩”（正如Jean所说）根本不足以形容……我不建议关节不好或不喜欢颠簸的人乘坐（至少要一个小时……）。
- 我们的车在返回基加利的途中抛锚了。当地人花了几个小时才修好吉普车，所以一定要随时准备一些零食！
