Short Hike to the Best View of the Haleakala Crater

点评：Next to the Summit Visitor's Center and adjacent to the trailhead for the Sliding Sands Trail is a short 0.5 mile round trip trail with only 114 of elevation to the top of a small hill that overlooks the VC and the Haleakala crater. While I was not at the summit for sunrise or sunset, I will agree with others that this hill has a much better view of the crater than the actual summit atop the Red Hill, a short drive away. The stats are hardly daunting; however, remember you are at nearly 9,900 feet of elevation so any hill can test your lungs and more than likely you have just climbed up the Sliding Sands trail, as we did.
As we were on the heels of the climb out of the crater, I was the only one in the family to hike this trail. I was rewarded with probably the best view of the crater; however, the Summit VC and top of the Sliding Sands trail have equally good views. I will say the summit of the hill is an impressive sight as you are hiking up the Sliding Sands Trail, so it is some personal valor to say I hiked to the top of that hill. Aside from the elevation and rock steps, the hike is not bad, much easier than the hike up Sliding Sands. Additionally, when I hiked it there were very few people of the tail, far less than the Red Hill or Sliding Sands. Finally, if you are looking for wild silverswords in the park, there are several growing on the west side of the White Hill, with a large view of plants between the White and Red hills. This you best place to see them if you don't want to hike miles.
