点评:This is a neighbour of the Brickendon estate which operated as a livestock farm in the early years of the penal colony. Its labour force was mostly 'assignees', these being convicts allocated to work for the estate owner who had to provide them with food and accommodation but did not have to pay them any wages.
The estate residence is no longer lived in but is open for guided tours. Thanks to the helpful Greg this was an interesting and informative introduction to the site.
Whilst the self-guided tour booklet was helpful, I felt that more information could have been provided at individual buildings.
There was an unfortunate ending to our visit. We went to the cafe shortly before its closing time. We asked for two sandwiches which were on display but were told that there was nobody to toast them. We were happy to eat them cold but were told that we could not be sold them as there was not a price listed for untoasted sandwiches!
Overall, we felt that more could be done to encourage development of the estate as a tourist attraction.
