点评：Calke Abbey was once a magnificent residence, as one can easily see upon looking at the outside. The difference between this and other Trust properties is that the Trust chose to leave the house as it was gifted to them and not upgrade it to its past glory.
I particularly enjoyed the caricature room, the first of its kind the I've seen, and the dining room that featured ornamentation similar to Adam's houses that we've toured in the past.
The main room was startling as it held cases of taxidermy birds among the furniture. quite disconcerting.
There was a state bed made for King George I in 1715. The Trust found the original linens rolled up in the basement. They now hang behind a glass enclosure as part of a bed that one can view while walking through the house.
The tour is self guided, but volunteers are frequent.
Much of the house, left "as is" shows signs of disrepair. Kind of sad to see ceilings sagging and wallpaper falling off the walls in rooms loaded with unused furniture and various items.
Definitely a different tour than others we've seen while going through National Trust properties. Their purpose was to preserve the house portraying the 20th century challenges in maintaining this type of country house that many did not survive to tell. And the point is certainly well made.
