点评:The Devil’s museum in Kaunas is a fun and quirky place to visit! Of all the places in the world, one wonders why there is a Devil’s museum in the second city of a nation that is still fairly religious. This is all explained inside!
Essentially, well known Lithuanian artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius was gifted a large wooden ornament where an angelic being was stamping on the figure of a devil. It was, however, too large to be transported to him in one piece and the gifter decided to cut away the angelic figure above the feet and give him just the feet and devil. Whilst it kept its original meaning, Antanas, having a fantastic, and irreverent, sense of humour loved it. To the point that friends and family would go to places and purchase devils for him to add to his ever growing collection.
The museum does a good job of displaying the collection given to him on the first floor, those donated after his death on the second, and then a devils from around the world section on the top. There’s a real mix of grotesque, humourous, and frightening depictions, wonderfully accompanied by ideas of what a devil is, in writing. Different cultures have different meanings of devils, why they manifest, and to what extent they play tricks, deceive and torment, and these stories are well worth reading. There are good examples of folk tales, and I wouldn’t skip these!
In addition to this, there are several rooms of his artwork, and his maintained house and studios, where he lived and worked. Also worth a look!
Definitely come armed with Antanas’s sense of fun and humour, and enjoy a light hearted museum full of excellent artwork and playful nature. No, it’s not a satanists paradise, designed to ensnare the average person, nor is it a scare attraction. It is what it is, a human collection of a joke that got out of hand! If you’ve ever collected anything in your life, you’ll probably understand.
If you’re going something heavier in subject, like the Great War Museum, or visiting the IX Fort, whiling away an amusing hour or so here, might just be the perfect tonic for afterwards!
