点评:Salaam Cave is a very cool experience in the southern part of the island and was much closer for us than many other activities, which was a big plus. The setting itself is unique and memorable.
That said, visitors should be aware that turtle bites can happen. Two out of the three of us were bitten during our visit, and neither incident was provoked. We were standing calmly in the water feeding the turtles when one bit my sister on her back and another bit me on the back of my thigh, breaking the skin. There was no safety briefing or warning beforehand that this could occur.
After the bites, both of us exited the water—my sister was understandably very shaken, while I was less upset but still concerned. Despite there being staff present, no one approached us until we asked about it. We were told that there are no disease concerns and that antiseptic can be applied at the top of the cave if someone is bitten.
We later researched this ourselves and were reassured that the risk is low, especially if you are up to date on your tetanus shot (which we were prior to traveling to Africa). When we asked our hotel about it afterward, they mentioned that this did not used to be common but seems to be happening more frequently.
Overall, the cave is interesting and beautiful, but clearer safety guidance and a briefing about turtle behavior would be helpful so visitors can make informed decisions before entering the water.
