An educational and entertaining visit to Glenshane Country Farm

点评：I was looking for a tour for our port visit to Belfast. We had been to Belfast in the past and had enjoyed small group tours of the city booked through Viator. Unfortunately this time I couldn’t find any tours that interested us. Since we were on a Princess cruise I searched the shore excursions offered by the cruise line. This was a last resort since cruise line excursions usually mean packed buses with passengers loading and unloading like cattle. Fortunately I found the excursion on Princess’ website titled “Sheep dogs and Stories” and booked it.
Our bus dropped us at Glenshane Country Farm where enjoyed a presentation by James, a fourth generation sheep farmer. We sat and listened to James for 20-30 minutes as we were presented with coffee, tea and light snacks. It was equal parts education and entertainment as we learned about sheep, sheep dogs, eccentric neighbors and the sheep raising business. We also met his 7 dogs and learned about their individual personalities.
We were given a wonderful demonstration of how border collies are trained and work with James to herd the sheep. Later we were introduced to the sheep. My wife will never forget holding a young lamb in her arms. James then briefly showed us the history of shearing tools used down through the years before he sheared a sheep right in front of us.
At the end of this we enjoyed spending money in the gift shop that stocked so many unique things.
We really enjoyed James’s wit and his wife’s hospitality. I definitely plan to return one day with my granddaughter.
On the way to our lunch at Friels Bar and Restaurant in Swatragh we passed a mural in the town of James and one of his dogs. Cool!
