点评:I had a wonderful time! I’d never been to this area before so each day was a surprise. I loved the train trip to Longreach and slept very well, much to other travellers surprise. The meals were excellent and there was nothing I could fault. When we arrived in Longreach we were greeted by Lyn and taken over the road to our accommodation. The motel was very comfortable and the breakfasts were accessible but the dinner on the first night left a lot to be desired! The Qantas light show was great then their museum on Tuesday was great. The Stockman’s Hall of Fame was sensational. The history of the stockmen was very informative but for me, the standout was the outdoor show with Stuie cracking his whips. I was spellbound by his extraordinary skill! In the evening we cruised the Thomson River which was very serene and watched a beautiful sunset. Dinner was lovely, a stew cooked in a camp oven followed by sticky date pudding. We enjoyed some lovely music sung by Drew Blundell. Following our visit to the Qantas museum we had a “billy can” lunch in the Cobb & Co Courtyard. Some of tour mates had a ride in a Cobb & Co Coach. Our evening was spent at Camden Park and Longreach Park Stations. We enjoyed another beautiful sunset from a paddock having a glass of wine and nibbles. This was followed by a very nice dinner. The next day we headed to Winton and visited the Australian age of Dinosaurs Museum which was quite amazing. It amazes me that I was looking at dinosaur bones 100 million years old! We had a great BBQ dinner on one of the jump ups where the museum is located. Next morning we headed off to McKinlay where Crocodile Dundees Walkabout Hotel is located and that brought back memories of that great Australian movie. We then headed to Mt
Isa via the Unearthed Museum. The next morning we visited the Underground Hospital which was a real eye opener! We also saw a tent house which gave s an idea of how our forbears lived. This was followed by a visit to an underground mine. It was very interesting and we had lunch in a crib room, served in a metal box, the same as the miners use. Personally I found this quite difficult as my mobility isn’t great and it lasted 3 hours with a lot of standing and uneven walking surfaces. However, it was very interesting and I’m glad I did it. The next day we travelled through Julia Creek where we stopped for lunch before heading to Richmond where we visited Kronosaurus Korner to view the marine fossils. They were absolutely mind blowing for me! I can’t get my head around how extensive they are. There were some fish fossils that had all their bones! And you know how small fish bones can be! There was one that is about 99% complete and it is VERY big! We enjoyed a really nice curry dinner, one of my favourites. Today we headed to Charters Towers for our last day of exploring this amazing area where we had a great guide and visited the Zara Clark Museum which is full of local history. We then went to the fairly new Miners’ Walk giving a great insight into conditions here during the gold rush and including a large glass square where you could look down a mine shaft (I found this particularly interesting). We also went to the gold tower complex where there is a huge wall of mosaic panels showing the history of Charters Towers. We then had our last dinner together. It was a wonderful trip. Our leaders Pete and Lyn were brilliant! Pete drove hundreds of miles to get us to each destination. Both of them are very knowledgeable and Pete has a great sense of humour. Lyn took such good care of us each day, organising everything we did. I can’t recommend this tour highly enough and already planning another one with them next year.
