点评:Our family loves visiting national park sites so during a northeastern trip we were driving through Delaware and looking for a good place to stop. First State National Historic Park is the only NPS site in Delaware and unique in that it is a collection of multiple locations throughout the state.
Our first stop was at Fort Christina in Wilmington. Another feature of this park is that it does not have regular visitor hours so we had to arrange our visit here through the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation. This was the site where Swedish and Finnish settlers landed in the Delaware Valley in 1638 and established the colony of New Sweden aboard the Kalmar Nyckel and Fogel Grip. A small park is left of this site with a monument and other signage detailing the history. This is also where we got our passport book stamp. The Old Swedes Church is right around the corner from here but it was closed when we visited.
We also went to New Castle and walked around the neighborhood where the New Castle Court House Museum is located. This site contains a visitor center for the First State National Historic Park but it also has limited hours and was closed during our visit. The neighborhood was fun to walk through on a fall morning to see the historic houses and a park on the banks of the Delaware River.
There are other sites for this park throughout the state and the primary visitor center is in Dover. We enjoyed our time but this park would mainly appeal to history lovers.
