点评:If you’re visiting Rochester because of Mayo Clinic, I highly recommend taking the guided tour of the Mayo Wood Mansion. It offers a wonderful glimpse into the life, vision, and personality of Dr. Charles “Charlie” Mayo, and helps explain some of the history behind one of the world’s most respected medical institutions.
Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and had a great sense of humour. Since several members of the Mayo family shared the name Charles, she did an excellent job keeping us from getting everyone mixed up!
One of the things I found most interesting was learning how forward-thinking Dr. Mayo was. He incorporated reclaimed wood from an old schoolhouse into the construction of his home, loved gardening, encouraged country living, and believed gardening should be taught in schools. The stories about his family, his property, and even the unusual animals he kept over the years made the tour both educational and entertaining.
The grounds are absolutely beautiful. There are walking trails, mature trees, a charming pagoda that once served as the family’s tea house, and abundant wildlife. As I was leaving, I spotted several deer, although they disappeared into the woods before I could photograph them. It was easy to understand why Dr. Mayo chose to create such a peaceful retreat away from the city.
One of the most memorable moments came at the end of the tour when we had the opportunity to meet Dr. Charlie Mayo (Young Dr Charlie), now 96 years old, along with his daughter, Liisa. Meeting a member of the present Mayo family added a very special and unexpected personal touch to the experience.
Visitors should know that photography is not permitted inside the mansion, so you’ll simply have to enjoy the experience without a camera. Also, the tour includes climbing quite a few stairs. While there is an elevator in the house, it is not available for public use. If mobility is a concern, it’s worth knowing that many rooms have chairs where visitors can sit during the tour. I have knee and back problems, and being able to sit periodically allowed me to comfortably enjoy the full 1-hour and 15-minute tour.
If you don’t take the guided tour, you may explore the beautiful grounds but not the interior of the mansion. In my opinion, the guided tour is well worth it. It brings the house to life through stories, history, and fascinating insights into the Mayo family, making it an experience I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Rochester.
