Fun, sun, fish, whales, and dinner!!

点评：From the minute we met Captain Ryan at the boat ramp (at 5:30am because we were really excited to get on the water), we knew we were in for a great day. He was friendly and knowledgeable and fielded all the questions from the kids. We chose the inshore trip because those tend to be more reliable for fish hits and our two kids wanted to catch something. We never had a quiet rod! Sunrise behind Maui as we went into the channel toward Lanai was stunning, and Ryan got us on bait (mackerel) right away so we could start going for the big fish.
Almost immediately, we landed bluefin trevally, followed soon after by peacock wrasse, amberjack, and a few beautiful grey snapper. The highlight of the trip was a giant trevally that weighed in at 36 pounds and was almost four feet long!!! We fought for half an hour to get it on the boat, and released it back to the ocean after thanking it for the sport it provided.
The boat (Kimmy V) was just the right size for our family of four, and had a marine head, storage for extra layers and food, and space for all four rods in the water. We fished a few spots inshore, drifting in currents and around underwater features, and would move quickly to other locations if they seemed quiet. Ryan had insider knowledge about various fish species and marine ecosystems because his wife’s a marine biologist. Even the famously seasonal humpback whales cooperated that morning, giving us numerous close up encounters of cows and calves and some double breaches for a show.
We were able to keep some fish for dinners, and Ryan cleaned and cut them to save us the gutting work. As captain, he gets to keep or sell the rest, and we were happy to help him have a good day on the water. Baked the trevally with garlic, olive oil, and macadamia nuts when we got home, and it was fantastic with just a squeeze of lemon. Might do ceviche or tacos for other fish. So many options!

我们钓到了一些鱼做晚餐，Ryan帮我们清理并处理了鱼，省去了我们开膛破肚的麻烦。作为船长，他可以把剩下的鱼留下来或者卖掉，我们也很乐意帮他度过美好的一天。回家后，我们把钓到的鲹鱼用大蒜、橄榄油和澳洲坚果烤了一下，挤上几滴柠檬汁，味道简直棒极了。下次可能会用其他鱼做酸橘汁腌鱼或者墨西哥卷饼。选择真多！
