点评：How you feel about (and rate) this museum will be probably be determined by how many other “national” caliber museums, such as the Smithsonian, you have visited. I drove about 100 miles with my grandchildren in order to visit and was seriously disappointed. We visited on a Wednesday during the summer and found few visitors in what appears to be a very neglected facility. (Trash cans were overflowing, some items on display were dusty, informational signs had apparently fallen weeks (months ?) ago and not been replaced, etc.) As a native Virginian, I am embarrassed by the condition of this facility which seems seriously underfunded and neglected. I think the museum is attempting to be too board in its scope. It should probably be only the “Virginia Ground Transportation Museum” and focus just on motor vehicles, streetcars and trains.For instance, there is a wall with old signs representing trucking companies that were (are) based in VA, but no trucks and little information about the trucking industry in VA. The sections about air and water transportation are very pitiful with mostly just random photos and scale models. In fact, the whole museum fills far too much space with plastic, wooden and metal models in proportion to the other items on display. It seems that someone donated a miniature circus display, which has little relevance to a transportation museum, except that circuses traveled by trucks or trains; however, that is scarcely mentioned. Too many displays look like they have not been touched in a decade or more. There is a large model train display, which needs to be “refreshed” as there are few model trains in operation in the large layout. I will commend the museum’s display regarding the history of racism and segregation in public transportation. Also, the 30-40 vintage cars are presented fairly well. The train engines and railroad cars outside are mostly dusty (dirty) and in deteriorating condition. We expected to see a lot more, accessible restored engines and railcars. (I know such preservation and restoration is very expensive; however, that is what museums typically offer). Outside you may walk around and look at the exterior of a few engines and railcars; however, you can see inside few of the engines and cars (which would be interesting). We were expecting to spend several hours here; however, we were finished in slightly more than two hours. I am honest (and do not “sugar coat”) my reviews. This museum needs major investment and upgrades to be viable and attract visitors or it will continue to decline. As is, it really appears dated and neglected and I cannot recommend it!
