Between Fire and Ice: Exploring Þingvellir in the Dead of Winter

点评：Overall impression:
These breathtaking natural settings are beautiful all year round; however, this review is specifically about the conditions during late December. While the Icy steps and snow-covered paths make for more treacherous walking, it is indeed worth the views!
Vibe & Atmosphere:
The atmosphere in the dead of winter is more subdued than in other seasons, and while it is more dangerous to traverse, it also feels authentically Icelandic. It is the “ice” in the land of “Fire and Ice”. Other tourists are present, but in far fewer numbers than in non-icy conditions.
What We Did while there:
We walked around the various spots, took in the views, and took pictures. We walked along the paths and read the placards explaining the significance of specific spots. We, of course, spent time at the UNESCO World Heritage site: “The Law Rock”, where the Icelandic Parliament met for centuries! We also took pictures at various spots such as the frozen waterfalls, overlooks, and the ridge facing “Snorri’s Booth”.
My favorite Moment:
Taking pictures in my Viking kit during the waning hours of sunlight against the backdrop of breathtaking settings.
Pros & Cons:
The pros of visiting during this time period are fewer crowds, beautiful scenery, and cinematic views during “golden hour” conditions, perfect for taking excellent pictures. The Cons, unfortunately, are dangerous conditions (we saw multiple people slip during our hour-long visit). It is what most people would consider “very cold”, and the stairs are all covered in ice with inconsistent handrail availability.
Tips for Future Travelers:
My recommendation for visiting during this time is to where rubber snow boots and equip them with crampons to provide a safer footing while traversing ice-covered steps.
