Great climbing and fabulous cafe
The Arc - The Climbing Academy的点评
点评：The Arc is a complex in Chippenham consisting of roped climbing walls, 2 bouldering rooms, a cafe, an outdoor climbing wall, an outdoor skatepark and an outdoor childrens playpark. This a review of the indoor parts (and the outdoor climbing wall).
PARKING
There is car parking near the centre itself, and the spaces are big (which is nice) but the numbers of spaces are limited and at busier times you need to park at a carpark up the hill (which is interestingly where the signposts send you anyway) which is a 5 minute walk to the centre. You need to use the RingGo app to pay, and internet reception is poor so I'd recommend downloading before you go - if struggling,
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Modern, clean with helpful staff.
REGISTERING AND COMPETENCY CHECKS
Registering is free and can be done before you go or on ipads when there. The competency checks for top rope/lead were spotting errors on photos, as were the checks for bouldering or autobelay. Autobelay inductions were done without needing to book.
STORAGE
Metal lockers, bring your own padlock. If you forget reception will lend you one in return for a driving license/shoe/other needed item.
TOILETS
Clean.
THE CLIMBING
There are 4 climbing areas: an upstairs smaller bouldering area, a downstairs bouldering area, a roped room and an outdoor wall.
The upstairs bouldering area is set with children in mind, although there are some problems suitable for adults on the far wall. It is less high. It also has a whole side of tranverse, which is great for less confident children.
The downstairs bouldering area is bigger with higher walls and designed for teens/adults. There is a small cave/overhang corner but most is fairly vertical. There is a nice range of problems.
The roped room has a mix of mainly top-roped lines, with a few lines (and an entire corner area) left for lead routes. There are also 6 autobelays. The difficulty of the routes is labelled on the wall, and they are on the Griponite app if you use that. The climbs are fun, and cover a range of difficulties but in general are 'softer' than in some other centres. This is of course always subjective and ultimately doesn't matter, as if you are finding it easier just climb a grade harder than usual.
The roped room is not spacious but neither is it too crowded, and the climbers there are friendly - its easier to get chatting to find belay partners there than in other more spaced out centres!
The outdoor wall is accessed by asking reception and using a swipe card. It is literally like an indoor wall but outside, which is nice in good weather.
THE CAFE
The cafe is superb. Amazing cakes, amazing wraps, all very reasonably priced. I would visit just for the cafe.
