Booked special assistance, received none!

点评:My teenage son is a wheelchair user and so we have used Gatwick Special Assistance many times over the years. It’s a bit hit and miss, we have received very good assistance at times but on our most recent trip this week it was very poor, despite booking assistance well in advance. We checked in with the special assistance desk after security at the North Terminal, and were told to make our own way to the gate and someone would meet us there later. When we got to the gate, there were no special assistance staff there. After a while the gate staff announced for special assistance passengers and speedy boarding passengers to come up, so we ended up having to board in a queue of speedy boarders, fold my son’s wheelchair and try and walk him down the aisle which was now full of speedy boarders who were in such a rush to get on board they couldn’t wait for a wheelchair user. My son can walk a little but needs a clear aisle to get to his seat easily, which isn’t easy when he isn’t able to get on the plane first which is what usually happens.
Our arrival back into Gatwick a few days later was no better as for some reason the baggage handlers thought it would be a good idea to send his wheelchair to baggage reclaim. Surely it doesn’t take a genius to realise that if someone has a wheelchair they will need it when they get off the plane. My son then had to go to baggage reclaim in an airport wheelchair which was too big for him and didn’t have the appropriate safety harnesses.
