点评:High marks for Dean Wallis and his team @bambuzajamaica! Whenever we travel, we try to get a feel for local culture and we try to support small businesses whenever possible. Bambuza Jamaica (BJ) came to our attention through the recommendation of some locals whom we met while staying at our resort in Green Island, just down the road. (We were in Jamaica for a long overdue and much needed holiday vacation.) The more established tour operators at the hotel were offering larger packages at higher rates and further distances, and we weren’t interested. Dean is a successful business man and Jamaican native. He’s also a relatively new player in the eco-adventure space, and offered something that felt better suited for our needs: Horseback riding and learning a bit more about the local flora and fauna without a multi-hour commitment and costly transportation. Additionally, he provided door-to-door service at a time of our convenience, not his. Basically, he removed a lot of the friction and concerns that often come with making decisions about day excursions from the relative safety of an all inclusive.
Jamaica has seen a recent boom in tourism and Mr. Wallis has literally planted his stake in the ground at this ecologically rich location. This is a brand new venture and, as such, they are still building out their infrastructure and their offerings. As a business, they employ mostly locals from the area (more on that in a moment) and Mr. Wallis has invested heavily back into the community by offering good jobs, helping to repair roads and to support educational needs in the local schools. BJ embodies the ethos of “one love” that permeates Jamaican spirit.
We remember smiling and feeling good about our decision as soon as we turned on to his property. The ranch is set in a bit of a valley with the surrounding forest cutback to showcase the lovely, well maintained grounds. The facilities were clean. Arrival consisted of a warm greeting by a uniformed member of his team (who also handles BJ social media) and then a quick review of the services offered and a reading/signing of a posted, standard waiver/release. Refreshments were readily available and there’s a little gift shop off the lobby if memory serves correctly. The horses are numerous (and well cared for) and easy to ride. There were goats (or maybe sheep) and a smattering of other typical animals one might find roaming around a ranch.
I’m not an adventure guy, per se, and I had planned to just chillax in the lobby, but when the teen and the wife went riding, I was invited to experience a walking tour of their property — well, just a small portion of it. My guide was a friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic man named André. He grew up just over the hill (where he still lives) and spent his youth roaming the property where he now works. He proudly shared the history of the land with me and was quick to crack open a pod, dig up a root, peel off a vine or pinch a flower to explain its value and what it meant to the locals. He was spry and energetic as he navigated the hilly terrain as a local would, offering a steadying hand to me as I occasionally slipped on the trail. (If you plan to walk, I might suggest wearing hiking boots, not sneakers or water shoes.) It wasn’t a long walk, but it was a satisfying one in many ways. I suppose that sentiment also applies to the horseback riding and zip-lining experience. We left happy and content and eager to spread the word with other guests and staff once we were back in the “castle” (my nickname for our all-inclusive resort). It was a full circle moment for us, hoping that the next family to contact BJ would say they heard about it as we had — through word of mouth. As I shared with Mr. Wallis on our ride back, our experience with Bambuza was one of the best parts of our trip, because he made it easy and fun, and there was something for my wife and teen (the thrill seekers), and me (the nature enthusiast). A solid return on our investment, I’d say. And we were back in time to catch a late lunch!
Thanks for reading. And thank you Bambuza!

Bambuza!
