点评:The 16th century Portugese fort of Bahrain is located about 7 km west of the Manama souk. I walked up and down, but most of the tour is of limited interest as most of the area is filled with skyscrapers and residential apartment blocks. Anyway, the walk gave me an idea of the distance between old and new. Originally the fort area was linked to the sea by a natural channel that allowed ships to dock at the fort. The opening in the reef was lost and ever since neglect set in. Manama port took over as central focal point.
The fort is a fine example of Portugese military architecture and is free to enter.
Perhaps more significant is the tell (artificial mound) on which the fort is built. It contains different layers with remnants of older civilizations among them of the Dilmun that existed during the Bronze age more than 4000 years ago. Artefacts and info is in the nearby museum. Closed on Mondays.
