One of the great scenic railjourneys in carriages not really fit for the purpose

点评：There is no getting away from the fact that this is one of the most scenic railways you're ever likely to encounter in the world. There's an ever-changing landscape of spectacular scenery accompanied by a highly informative/funny commentary (in english, german, french and norwegian) that alerts you to all the highlights (4 times). At key points, the train slows down and you will find yourself forever trying to capture multiple truly beautiful vistas (and the trolls that inhabit it).
But therein lies the one big issue. Unlike some other scenic trains in Norway, the Golden Train carriages are not purpose-built for scenery-gazing. By this, I mean the windows aren't especially big or designed to ensure that every seat gets a big window (as opposed to a big chunk of pillar). Most noticeable is that they didn't have the quarter-glazed roofs that extend the in-seat view and give much more of an all-round viewing experience. There's a simple reason for that and it's because the trains, despite their garish golden livery, are repurposed passenger trains that haven't in any way been tailored to their new purpose despite the vast cost of tickets. As a result of these shortcomings, there are many seats in which you will feel somewhat cheated and getting up and down and straining across people to get that perfect shot is an increasingly tedious necessity along with the sense that you haven't quite got the best of it all.
I noticed that for much of the journey, a road runs alongside the route of the train which makes me feel that another time, I would much prefer to hire a car to take in the scenery in all its majesty than take a train which made me feel somewhat short-changed.
Finally, it's worth saying that there were more than a few of us in our carriage who smugly took delight in getting a much better deal than offered as an excursion on the Hurtigruten.
